“We Expected More From Him”: Ajit Agarkar Explains Karun Nair’s Omission From India’s Test Squad vs West Indies

India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar has shed light on the decision to leave out Karun Nair from the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies, starting October 2 in Ahmedabad.

Nair, who made a comeback to the Indian Test side earlier this year, scored 205 runs in four Tests against England at an average of 25.62, including a gritty fifty in the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which India won by just 6 runs. Despite his efforts, the selectors felt his performances were not enough to cement his place.

Agarkar admitted the call was tough but emphasized that the selectors expected more consistency from the 32-year-old middle-order batter.

“I mean obviously, frankly, we expected a little bit more from him, he has played four Tests. We have spoken about one innings. As the way it is, I mean, we feel Padikkal offers a little bit more at this point, and I wish we could have given everyone 15 or 20 Tests. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way,” Agarkar said.

📌 Why Devdutt Padikkal Was Preferred

Backing the inclusion of Devdutt Padikkal, Agarkar pointed to the youngster’s recent form and adaptability in the longest format.

  • Padikkal has already been a part of India’s Test squad in Australia.
  • He scored a half-century in Dharamsala against England earlier this year.
  • He has shown consistent performances for India A, making him a strong contender for the middle-order slot.

Agarkar highlighted that Padikkal brings “a little bit more” at this stage compared to Nair.

📖 Karun Nair’s Test Journey: From Highs to Lows

Karun Nair remains best remembered for his historic triple century against England in 2016, becoming only the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to achieve the feat. However, since then, his career has seen constant ups and downs, with limited opportunities and inconsistent form keeping him on the fringes of selection.

The latest omission once again pushes him out of favour as the selectors look to invest in younger talents like Padikkal and Yashasvi Jaiswal for India’s middle order.

🏏 India’s Squad for West Indies Tests

Despite speculations about workload management, the selectors have named a full-strength squad to keep momentum in the World Test Championship.

  • Shubman Gill will lead the team.
  • Ravindra Jadeja has been appointed as vice-captain.
  • Rishabh Pant remains unavailable as he recovers from a foot injury.
  • Prasidh Krishna, despite suffering a head injury in India A’s recent game, has been included.
  • India play their Asia Cup 2025 final on September 28, giving little rest before the Test series begins.

  • Devdutt Padikkal’s recent form and adaptability tilted the decision in his favour.
  • India will play a two-Test home series against West Indies starting October 2.
  • Selectors have opted for a full-strength squad to boost the World Test Championship campaign.

📌 Conclusion

While Karun Nair’s triple century remains an iconic moment in Indian cricket, his inability to deliver consistent performances has once again cost him a spot in the national team. With Padikkal, Jaiswal, and Sudharsan making their mark, the selectors are clearly investing in the future core of India’s Test batting line-up.

The upcoming series against West Indies will be crucial not just for India’s World Test Championship points but also for shaping the next generation of Indian Test cricketers.
