IND vs SL: Why Smriti Mandhana Is Not Playing India’s 5th T20I Against Sri Lanka

India made a couple of notable changes for the fifth and final T20I against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram, with star opener Smriti Mandhana missing from the playing XI. The decision surprised many fans, especially after her record-breaking performances earlier in the series.

However, the reason behind Mandhana’s absence is straightforward — she has been rested.

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur confirmed at the toss that Mandhana, along with fast bowler Renuka Singh Thakur, was given a break as part of squad rotation.

With India already securing an unassailable 4–0 lead in the five-match series, the team management decided to manage workloads and give opportunities to other players ahead of upcoming international commitments.

🗣️ What Harmanpreet Kaur Said at the Toss

Explaining the changes, Harmanpreet said India wanted to maintain momentum while also testing bench strength.

“Yes, we have two changes today. Smriti and Renuka are resting. Kamalini is going to debut and Sneh Rana is back,” Harmanpreet said.

She added that India wanted to finish the series strongly and continue the positive approach that brought them success throughout the tour.

🌟 Opportunity for Youngsters

Seventeen-year-old G Kamalini made her international debut in the final T20I and received her cap from Harmanpreet Kaur.
All-rounder Sneh Rana also returned to the playing XI, replacing Renuka Singh Thakur.

The changes underline India’s focus on bench strength, rotation, and long-term planning, especially after a demanding season.

🏏 Series Context: Why Rest Was Possible

Reasons Behind Mandhana’s Absence:

  • India had already won the series 4–0

  • Opportunity to test young players
  • Workload management ahead of future tournaments
