Kolkata, Aug 14, 2025 – Kolkata Police have made a second arrest in connection with the violent incidents during the Nabanna Avijan on August 9, which coincided with the first anniversary of the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

The latest arrest was made on Wednesday night, with the accused identified as Manas Chandra Saha, a resident of Naihati, North 24 Parganas district. Police sources confirmed that evidence links Saha directly to the incident where a police constable was allegedly thrown on the road and beaten during the protests.


Background of the Case

Earlier, on Tuesday, the first arrest was made when Chandan Gupta, a 40-year-old resident of Jagaddal in North 24 Parganas, was taken into custody. Chandan was apprehended at the junction of BB Ganguly Street and Bentinck Street in Kolkata.

Chandan faces multiple charges, including:

  • Attempt to murder
  • Obstructing a government servant from performing duties
  • Intentionally causing injury

He was produced in Bankshall Court and remanded to police custody until August 15. Details about Manas Chandra Saha’s political affiliation remain unclear. A senior police officer stated:

“He will be produced in court today. We will investigate further into the case after taking him into our custody.”


The Nabanna Avijan Incident

The Nabanna Avijan protest coincided with the first anniversary of the brutal murder of a woman junior doctor. The march turned violent following a scuffle between police and protesters.
